I think I’ve found a little piece of heaven in Alicante’s old town. Coffee addicts will want to head to the Madness Cafe for sure. There’s no connection to Suggs and his nutty boys as far as I can tell, but read further down this blog for a bit of word fun on a Madness theme. For now though, let’s concentrate on the coffee.
Freshly brewed coffee ground from beans roasted on site make for the perfect coffee in the perfect café. Add into that an eclectic mix of decor and some rather unusual seating opportunities, and you have one of Alicante’s quirkiest coffee houses with very reasonable prices to boot. Sitting downstairs at the traditional wooden tables you can watch the world go by at the bar and out of the window. Venture further inside and upstairs, and you may find yourself drinking coffee sat beneath an old-fashioned hooded hair dryer, on a table containing an old record player, or in a tiny little garden. There are even coffee machines in the toilets, but they are not used!
There are various coffees available from around the world. I opted for Brazilian, reportedly the strongest brew in the house. Whilst mine was super strong, it lacked the richness of flavour bursting from the Colombian version Mrs Paella ordered. Both were served on custom made plates with special housings for your spoon and a delightful little biscuit. Not bad for a €2 americano. There’s a full range of different types of coffee and ways of brewing it, including the Aeropress we favour at home.
They do food too, but we were just there for the coffee! Everything we saw going out to other tables looked mouth watering and we certainly heard no complaints from anyone. Maybe next time! There’s also a range of craft ales if you are looking for something a little stronger.
Keep an eye on their web page or on Facebook as they do tasting sessions and the opportunity to blend your own coffee. They are also expanding, and their cafe in Barcelona has already opened in the World Trade Centre near the port.

Coffee. In our house it is so important. When dawn arrives, that’s the way to do it. In the sun and the rain I need my coffee in the morning, especially on the coldest day when without it I’d be at risk of a cardiac arrest for sure. We’re not alone: the young and the old alike need their caffeine fix. I’m sure even Michael Canine does too. Imagine the embarrassment of having no money for coffee. What a grey day that would be. I’m sure my girl (Mrs Paella) would help me out, the sweetest girl as she is. It must be love after all. If I’ve been driving in my car in the rain in the city, I’ll get back to the house of fun in time for tea. Tea? I can take it or leave it but I can’t live without my caffeine. Tomorrow’s just another day though, but it will start as usual with a coffee. One better day for sure. That helps me go one step beyond. Maybe one day I’ll even get that night boat to Cairo. What’s that? Shut up you said?! And not a word about Baggy Trousers either!!!
