There’s always something new to try in Spain. I’m a big fan of Spanish red wines from pretty much any part of the country. The rosés are very special too. I’ve even managed to get a taste for white wine which is something I haven’t had for a while. Blue wine though? Well, that’s something very different so I just had to give it a try!
Up in the Basque Country a company called Gik are trying to change the world! They have produced this wine with a magnificent sky blue colour. It certainly looks extraordinary and I would encourage everyone to give it a go. I managed to pick up a bottle in El Corte Ingles in Alicante for €7. That’s cheap enough to see if it’s to your liking, I’m sure. If you like a sweet, fruity wine then it’s probably going to suit your palate fine. Sadly I like mine a lot drier than this so it wasn’t quite was I was looking for taste-wise.
I was then delighted to be introduced to Azul Mediterráneo at a trade fair in Torrevieja. Their blue chardonnay was just what I was looking for. It is crisp and refreshing, and perfect for summer drinking! They also do a frizzante version which is lightly sparkling and just as tasty. Based in Altea, Valencia, their produce isn’t as easy to get hold of, but if you find some, buy it and you won’t be disappointed.
When your team play in blue and white, blue wine is perfect for celebrations. A glass of blue out in the sunshine! Can life get any better?!!
This whole journey of mine into blue wine began in the city of Valladolid. We were there for the ‘Writers and Bloggers about Spain‘ conference in 2016. During a lovely evening of wine tasting a bizarre concoction was served up which was blue in colour but had a bizarre silvery substance in it giving it a completely psychedelic appearance. Whilst that was clearly nothing more than a gimmick, the idea has been taken to new extremes by some very clever wine makers around Spain.
